What Clematis Street Has Needed for Years: An Exciting New MAKEOVER!
MAKEOVER, a devilishly delightful musical by engineer-turned-playwright Mark Poncy of North Palm Beach, returns to the Cuillo Centre for the Performing Arts previews on Friday, October 3. Described as a contemporary fairy tale where "Nip/Tuck meets Damn Yankees," the show had several public readings at the Cuillo in 2007 and recently completed a month-long run at the Hollywood Playhouse. Local writers have hailed MAKEOVER as "a melodic gift" (Miami Herald), "Electrifying" (Sun-Times) and "A Keeper" (Sun-Sentinel).
A classic story of the struggle between good and evil, MAKEOVER is cloaked in a contemporary theme of plastic surgery gone awry. The message is a simple one: while people tend to be preoccupied with the fleeting fancy of appearances, it is what is beneath the surface that matters the most.
MAKEOVER tells the story of Valerie, who unwittingly makes a deal with the devil in order to realize her dreams of being beautiful, but comes to grief when she loses sight of those treasures that she had possessed all along–an inner beauty energized by a loving (though not always caring) family.
The book and lyrics of MAKEOVER are by Mark Poncy of North Palm Beach, who holds numerous patents for medical devices that he invented, ranging from tampons and surgical gloves to intravenous catheter feeding and placement systems.
MAKEOVER features nearly two dozen songs that are eclectic in style and wonderfully clever. Poncy's haunting musical score and satiric lyrics always hit their mark, providing an emotional ride for the audience.
Mary Gorin of the prestigious Juilliard School of Music has hailed the show's "stunning original score," while Dr. Donn Murphy, the executive director of the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., praised the script with a heartfelt, "Bravo!"
Preview performances for MAKEOVER will begin on Friday, October 3, with the show's official opening night on Saturday, October 11. Tickets are $45 (for premium seating) or $40, and only $35 for groups of 10 and more. To reserve tickets, please call the Cuillo Box Office at 561.835.9226.
The Cuillo production of MAKEOVER will feature the same stars that did the world premiere run at the Hollywood Playhouse, including Jack James, Katie Angell Thomas and Don Stansfield.
